Did you know, one in six children in our area battle food insecurity? Second Harvest aims to close that gap through programs like BackPack Buddies, No Hunger Summer, and Campus Cupboards.
Campus Cupboards are located on middle school, high school, and college campuses. If you've ever wondered where food drive items or other donations go once they come to Second Harvest, Campus Cupboards are one of the main programs they benefit.
North Daviess school currently has between 22 to 25 families who utilize their Campus Cupboard throughout the school year.
PAT Educator, Vera, knows the importance of keeping kids fed, "(Without the Campus Cupboard) I know we would have kids that would be coming to school on Mondays hungry, or on Fridays sometimes asking for some peanut butter crackers because they know that there's not going to be as much food in their cupboard. That child is not going to have the memory and retention. If you're hungry, all you want to think about is getting something to eat."
It's also important to make sure all families using the Campus Cupboard feel welcome, "We all have been in that boat where we needed that extra little money to make ends meet. There's nothing wrong with that. We're here to help you."
